Ann Patricia (Grauert) Kahl died June 5, 2017, after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. She was born in West Reading in 1930 and returned to West Reading for her passing 87 years later. Ann was a daughter of the late Walter and Mary Ann (Walsh) Grauert, and was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Deloss Kahl and siblings Mary Jane (Grauert) Deeter and Walter E. Grauert. She is survived by her children: Carol Ann Kahl of Berkeley, CA, Paula (Polly) Susan Kahl of Wernersville, Michael Walter Kahl of Wernersville, and Jamie Alison (Kahl) Miller of Albany, CA, plus three grandchildren.
Ann was a unique, intelligent and creative individual who lived life to the fullest. She loved creating art, beautiful old country homes and her dogs. She received awards in both painting and photography, and had several one-woman-shows. Ann studied Zen Buddhist meditation for over twenty years and was one of Berks County’s first hospice workers. Her favorite places in Reading were the Peanut Bar, where her parents partied during the speakeasy years in the 1920s, and the Ukranian-American Social Club, where she loved dancing to her local musician-friends playing jazz.
Ann was an old hippie who loved having fun. When it became clear her end was near, Ann stated that she felt much sadness about “not being able to stay at the party.” The week before she passed, she stated that she had a busy week ahead because she “was saying goodbye to all of her friends here and was preparing to meet all of her new friends in the new place she would be.” Wherever she is now, Ann is making new friends and is surely the belle of the ball.
The Cremation Society of Berks County. Inc., is in charge of arrangements.
